Tooth Extraction Process
: Pressure Without Pain

We prioritize your comfort at every step. To ensure a painless experience, the doctor will numb your tooth, jaw bone, and surrounding gums with a local anesthetic.

You will feel pressure
but you will not feel pain

What if a tooth is firmly anchored?

Sectioning a Tooth | Some teeth require a common procedure called ‘sectioning.’ If a root is curved or firmly anchored, the doctor simply cuts the tooth into sections and removes them one at a time to ensure a gentle and safe extraction.

Tooth Extractions in Sunnyvale, CA

At Huh Dental Wellness, your long-term dental health is our priority. Our doctors may determine that a tooth extraction is necessary for various reasons, including:

  • Severe Decay: Teeth that can no longer be restored

  • Periodontal Disease: Advanced gum disease affecting tooth stability

  • Structural Damage: Teeth broken in a way that cannot be repaired

  • Orthodontic Prep: Removal of poorly positioned or impacted teeth to align your smile

The removal of a single tooth can lead to problems related to your chewing ability, problems with your jaw joint, and shifting teeth, which can have a major impact on your dental health.

After Tooth Extraction Care

1. Immediate Healing after Tooth Extraction (First 24 Hours)

  • Stop the Bleeding: After tooth extraction, it’s important for a blood clot to form to stop the bleeding and begin the healing process. Bite on a gauze pad for 30-45 minutes immediately after the appointment. If the bleeding or oozing still persists, place another gauze pad and bite firmly for another 30 minutes. You may have to do this several times to staunch the flow of blood.

  • Control Swelling: Apply an ice pack (or a bag of frozen peas) to the area. Swelling usually subsides after 48 hours.

  • Medication: Take pain medications and antibiotics exactly as prescribed. Call us if the medication doesn’t seem to be working. If antibiotics are prescribed, continue to take them for the indicated length of time even if signs and symptoms of infection are gone.

  • It is important to resume your normal dental routine after 24 hours.

2. Protecting the Blood Clot (The "Don’ts" for 72 Hours)

To ensure proper healing, do not disturb the blood clot for at least 72 hours:

  • NO vigorous rinsing or spitting.

  • NO sucking through straws.

  • NO smoking or drinking alcohol.

  • NO brushing the teeth immediately next to the extraction site.

  • NO vigorous exercise for the first 24 hours.

  • After the blood clot forms it is important to not disturb or dislodge the clot. Do not rinse vigorously, suck on straws, smoke, drink alcohol or brush teeth next to the extraction site for 72 hours. These activities may dislodge or dissolve the clot and hinder the healing process. Limit vigorous exercise for the next 24 hours, as this increases blood pressure and may cause more bleeding from the extraction site.
  • After a few days you should feel fine and can resume your normal activities. If you have heavy bleeding, severe pain, continued swelling for 2-3 days, or a reaction to the medication, call our office immediately.

3. Nutrition & Hygiene

  • Diet: Drink plenty of fluids and eat nutritious, soft foods on the day of the extraction. You can resume a normal diet as soon as you feel comfortable.

  • Oral Routine: After 24 hours, resume your normal dental routine, including brushing and flossing at least once a day. This speeds up healing and keeps your mouth clean.
