What Are Dental Inlays and Onlays?

Precision Restoration for Damaged Teeth, Dental Inlays and Onlays

When more than half of the tooth’s biting surface is damaged, a dentist will often use an inlay or onlay. Inlays and onlays can be made of porcelain, gold, or composite resin. These pieces are bonded to the damaged area of the tooth. An inlay, which is similar to a dental filling is used inside the cusp tips of the tooth. An onlay is a more substantial reconstruction, similar to the inlay but extending out over one or more of the cusps of the tooth.

Traditionally, gold has been the material of choice for inlays and onlays. In recent years, however, porcelain has become increasingly popular due to its strength and color, which can potentially match the natural color of your teeth.

Inlays and Onlays Process

We prioritize both the fit and the durability of your restoration.

Increasing tooth strength by up to 75% through high-strength bonding

The procedure entails a thorough removal of dental plaque and tartar (calculus) from both above and below the gum line. We meticulously clean the root surfaces to remove toxins and encourage the gums to reattach to the teeth.

Precision Restoration in Two Visits

Inlays and onlays require two appointments to complete the procedure.

  • First Visit: The damaged or decaying area of the tooth is removed, and the tooth is prepared. To ensure a proper fit, an impression is made and sent to a lab for fabrication. A temporary sealant is applied to protect the tooth.

  • Second Visit: Our doctors will remove the temporary sealant and ensure the inlay or onlay fits correctly. Once the fit is satisfactory, it is bonded to the tooth with a strong resin and polished.

The Benefits of Inlays and Onlays

1. Enhanced Tooth Strength

Traditional fillings can reduce the strength of a natural tooth by up to 50 percent. As an alternative, inlays and onlays are bonded directly onto the tooth using special resins, which can increase the strength of a tooth by up to 75 percent.

2. Long-Lasting Durability

Due to the high-strength materials and precise lab fabrication, these restorations are remarkably durable. With proper care, inlays and onlays can last from 10 to 30 years.

3. Superior Alternative to Crowns

When a simple filling isn’t enough but a full crown is unnecessary, inlays and onlays offer a conservative yet powerful solution that preserves more of your natural tooth structure.
