What is Dentistry for the Whole Family?
Cultivating Lifelong Wellness from Childhood to Adulthood
Family dentistry is similar to general dentistry in that they both center around treating patients’ dental health and hygiene. However, family dentistry specializes in serving the unique dental needs of children and teenagers, as well as adults. At Huh Dental Wellness, our team proudly provides dental services to families and patients throughout the South Bay area.
The early years of a person’s life are the most important in cultivating lifelong dental wellness and preventing oral health complications in the future. We understand that sometimes kids don’t like going to the dentist, which is why we make every patient’s visit engaging, fun, and memorable. Our goal is to make it easy for kids to enjoy their experience and foster good oral health for the entire family.
When Do Your Child’s Teeth Begin to Emerge?
Understanding the Stages of Oral Development
Your child’s teeth and jaw go through several critical stages of development from infancy to early adulthood.
Early Stages: By the time your child is between 6 to 8 months old, you should begin to see the two bottom front teeth, followed by the four upper front teeth.
Full Primary Teeth: Periodically over the next two years, the remainder of the baby teeth will emerge. Most children have all 20 teeth by the time they are around 2 ½ years old.
Permanent Teeth: These typically begin emerging between the ages of 5 and 6, but every child is different. Do not be concerned if your child starts getting their permanent teeth a few 캐월 early or late.
The Family Dentistry Care Process
1. Dental Cleanings & 6-Month Check-Ups
Creating a lifelong habit starts with regular care. For children, we recommend bi-annual dental check-up appointments. During these visits, our team cleans the teeth of plaque buildup and ensures that nothing is hindering the natural development of the jaw.
2. X-Rays, Radiographs & Diagnostics
A family dentist periodically performs x-rays to ensure the oral anatomy is developing correctly. These tools are invaluable for detecting hidden problems in the jaw and teeth, such as cavities, bone levels, or even rare lesions like cysts or tumors.
3. Preventative & Restorative Treatments
Fluoride Treatments: After a routine cleaning, we may recommend fluoride to strengthen teeth and provide a protective coating against decay.
Dental Sealants: Since children’s teeth are prone to cavities, we often recommend bonding a dental sealant to the back teeth to create a strong foundation of health.
Tooth Repair: Cavities and minor damage are common issues for children. We catch and fill cavities while there is still a tooth to save, avoiding complications down the road.
Your Child’s First Dentist Appointment
Ensuring a Great First Experience
After a child’s first birthday, they should have their first appointment. This visit is usually brief and involves very little treatment, but it is crucial to ensure early development is complication-free.
What Happens During the Visit?
Gentle Examination: The dentist might ask you to sit in the dental chair with your baby and hold them upright. We gently examine the teeth and gums and may take x-rays to ensure no looming issues.
Healthy Habits: We evaluate habits like thumb sucking and teach you exactly how to clean and care for your child’s new teeth.
Preparation: To set anxieties at ease, we recommend reading a book about the dentist with your child or talking to them about your own positive experiences. You can even take a tour of our office before the day of the procedure!
Advanced Preventative Care: Understanding Cavities
Why Diet Matters for Your Child's Saliva
Cavities are caused by acid-producing bacteria that create holes in the tooth’s surface over time, often due to excess sugar and a lack of brushing.
The Science of Saliva
A person’s saliva becomes thicker when they eat a high-sugar and carbohydrate diet. Thick saliva has a difficult time washing away cavity-causing bacteria. By providing your child with a low-sugar diet, you enable the production of thin saliva, which naturally cleans the mouth more effectively.
Tips for Parents:
Limit the frequency of meals and snacks.
Encourage consistent brushing, flossing, and rinsing.
Watch what your child drinks and avoid sticky foods.
Make treats part of regular meals and choose nutritious snacks.
