It’s Never Too Late to Improve Your Smile: Bernadette’s Invisalign Journey

For many people, the decision to straighten their teeth isn’t just about having a more attractive smile. Sometimes, it begins with concerns about comfort, tooth wear, or simply wanting to take better care of their teeth for the years ahead.

For Bernadette, the decision to begin Invisalign treatment came later in life—and for more than one reason.

She had been dealing with jaw clenching and teeth grinding and had developed cracks in some of her teeth. Her teeth were also noticeably crowded and crooked. After discussing her concerns with her dentist, she decided that it was finally time to consider straightening them.

“It was late in life I decided to try it. Maybe I’ll have more comfort in my jaw.”

And so, her Invisalign journey began.

More Than Just Straightening Her Teeth

Like many adults considering orthodontic treatment, Bernadette wasn’t necessarily looking for a dramatic cosmetic transformation.

Her goal was more practical: improve the alignment of her teeth while addressing some of the concerns that had developed over the years.

As treatment progressed, she began to notice a significant difference.

“There’s been a great improvement.”

Bernadette also felt that wearing the aligners gave her teeth a sense of protection during treatment, particularly given her history of clenching and grinding.

By the end of her Invisalign journey, the change she could see was undeniable.

“The teeth really straightened.”

Bernadette’s comments about clenching and the protective feeling of her aligners describe her personal experience. Invisalign treatment is designed to move and align teeth and should not be considered a treatment for bruxism or jaw clenching.

What Is It Actually Like to Live With Invisalign?

Bernadette is also refreshingly candid about something prospective Invisalign patients often want to know:

Does wearing aligners require a lifestyle adjustment?

Her answer is yes.

She describes Invisalign treatment as requiring both discipline and consistency.

The aligners need to be removed when appropriate, kept clean, put back in as directed, and worn consistently, including while sleeping.

“It did require a lot of discipline… You have to take it out and be diligent and clean and put it back in and sleep with it at night.”

For Bernadette, those new habits took some getting used to.

She describes the beginning of treatment as a period of transition rather than pretending that wearing aligners required no adjustment at all.

But she stuck with it.

And looking back, she believes that commitment was worth it.

“I stuck with it, and I’m very happy with the results.”

A Smile She—and Her Family—Could See

Interestingly, Bernadette says she had already learned to accept her smile before beginning Invisalign.

She wasn’t someone who refused to smile because of her teeth.

But seeing her teeth after treatment gave her a new perspective.

“I was okay before. I accepted the reality of my teeth, but now that it’s better, I feel much better.”

And sometimes the people closest to us notice a change even before we realize how significant it is.

For Bernadette, that was her children.

Their reaction?

“Oh, wow. It changed.”

Her response may be our favorite part of her story:

“If my children are happy, I’m happy.”

Considering Invisalign as an Adult?

Bernadette’s experience is a reminder that orthodontic treatment isn’t limited to teenagers or young adults.

Adults may consider Invisalign for many different reasons—from crowded or crooked teeth to wanting a smile they feel better about.

And while clear aligners can be discreet, successful treatment still requires commitment. Wearing the aligners for the prescribed amount of time, maintaining good oral hygiene, and following your dentist’s instructions are all important parts of the process.

Bernadette made that commitment later in life.

Today, she has straighter teeth, is pleased with the result, and has a smile that even earned a “Wow” from her children.

For her, that made the journey worthwhile.
